How Do You Say Viognier – My Winespill
How do you say Viognier?
Vee-on-yay, another white French wine that is hard to pronounce. You don’t say it my friend you drink it. An aromatic white wine comparable to the full-bodied Chardonnay.

The comeback king
Viognier found its way to the south France in Condrieu from the Dalmatia region in Croatia in 280 AD.
The popularity of this grape diminished over the centuries to a small 34 acre plot in 1971 in the Rhône valley.
Viognier in the United States
It was reintroduced to the United States in the early 80’s where vineyards of the grape sustained it, finding for themselves why it almost became extinct.
The Viognier grape is tricky to grow. It requires a long, warm growing season to ripen, but if it is too hot the grape develops high levels of sugars which increases the alcohol content of the wine.
What does Viognier smell like?
The flavor spectrum is dependent on how ripe the grapes are at harvest time. On a flavor rating from 1-4, 4 being the ripest:
- Grapefruit
- Stone fruit (apricot, peach)
- Tropical fruit (mango, persimmon)
- Nutty almond
Viognier is a full-bodied wine yet soft and lush in character. The natural aromatics have a finesse of subtle flavors that are all in balance.
Viognier is closest to a Chardonnay in flavor. A Sauvignon Blanc has more acidity making the Viognier easier to drink.
Chilled at 52 degree F, Viognier will make for a refreshing glass of wine. Not too cold so you can enjoy the full, rich flavor of the wine.
A Test Tasting of Viognier
Viognier should taste round, rich and intense with a proper amount of acidity and freshness. Try your own tasting and be sure to take wine noteswine notes!
