Arches National Park

Arches National Park lies north of Moab in the state of Utah. Bordered by the Colorado River in the southeast, it’s known as the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, such as the massive, red-hued Delicate Arch in the east. Long, thin Landscape Arch stands in Devils Garden to the north.

Other geological formations including Balanced Rock, towering over the desert landscape in the middle of the park. A surreal setting when you grow up in the lush farm lands in the Midwest. Moving to Salt Lake City and loving the outdoors, this is a Mecca of the West.

My favorite hike thus far in my life has been the hike to Delicate Arch. I’ve made the trek several times and would recommend making the journey.  I missed it so much after we left the state of Utah I painted this watercolor.

Delicate Arch – Arches National Park

There is something about the red rocks that feels other-worldly and mysterious. To walk through valleys and hike the surface throughout this terrain brings me a sense of belonging to this land.

The Hike to Delicate Arch

The hike to Delicate Arch is 1.6 miles each way. It’s an out and back trail, so you return the same way that you trekked in. It is mostly uphill, but the trail is very developed. No matter your fitness levels, you should be able to comfortably finish the hike up to Delicate Arch. And know that your way back is mostly back downhill.

My first trek into the park I had my 8 year old daughter and the second trek we brought my parents. To this day my parents remember that trek and they are not hikers. So it may have been because of how they felt the day after, but I’m sure it was because of the experience.

Nearby is a winery tucked away by a 5 star resort and restaurant. If you are in the Moab area be sure to visit Castle Creek Winery. It overlooks the Colorado river and you can witness the white water rapids racing by. The dry climate gives them the optimum variety of wines and they have “produced over 30 award-winning wines for your enjoyment.” – CCW
